Abstract
The purpose of this study is to investigate how song-autobiography activities influence on the sense of ego-integrity of the elderly. The participants were 16 (randomly assigned 8 in experiment group, 8 in wait-list control group) elderly people aged 65 years or older in the welfare center for the elderly in Y city. The dependent variables of the study are satisfaction of daily life, life with wisdom, attitude to the life, acceptance of past life, and acceptance of aging and death. The experiment group performed a total of twelve 50-minute sessions of song-autobiography activities for 6 weeks, twice a week, and the wait-list control group participated in the program provided by the welfare center during the same time period. As a result, for the differences between groups, the experiment group showed significant improvements in the overall categories of ego-integrity compared to the wait-list control group. This implies that song-autobiography activities enabled the participants to reaffirm the past and to focus on now and here, and exerted the positive impact on their acceptance of whole lives by providing them with the strength to overcome fear of the future.
